I have not included information on Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.   Although some may find it attractive for the sheer wilderness solitude, for all the driving and effort you must exert to get there, there is really nothing to do except see big trees and a giant canyon that is quite dangerous to drive.  There is excellent backpacking, but as long as you're on the John Muir Trail, you'll see the best of it.
